Travels to Guatemala

In the last years, some groups have visited Guatemala with Max Umiker on a 20-day trip. Some highlights were the inauguration of 2 classrooms and the visits to Tikal, the ruins at Copán (Honduras), the Indio markets at Chichi and Todos Santos at almost 2400m, the beautiful Lake of Atitlán among many other.

There will be a further tour in the near future, from 22 March to 10 April 2010. They will also last about 3 weeks, and will take in the Pacific coast in the south. They will then cross the country to Tikal in the jungle of Petén, and continue via Livingston and back to Antigua. Our aim is to give an unforgettable insight into the various cultures of Guatemala, from the present day to their roots some 2500 years ago.

PROBIGUA Trip to Guatemala 2011

Guatemala – Land of the Mayas – offers an unforgettable view of Indio cultures from their beginnings 2500 years ago to the present day, and a unique landscape of volcanoes, lakes and tropical forests. Come and see this colourful country for yourself, and learn more about the work and aims of PROBIGUA in Guatemala. We – PROBIGUA (above all Max Umiker) and Viajes Sacbé – have put together a special Mayan history programme, from the first settlements to the mysterious disappearance of this culture when the Spaniards arrived, right up to the present time. We start in Antigua, Guatemala. Declared a world cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1979, this city lies at the foot of three volcanoes and is typical of the country with its mixture of Mayan, colonial and modern cultures. From here we go to the Pacific coast.

Then off to the mountains and the beautiful Lake Atitlán with its local villages, all proud of their local traditions and costumes. We go on to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second largest city, whose surroundings offer a wide variety of natural beauty and authentic Mayan culture – and also the chance of a dip in the hot springs of Fuentes Georginas. The department of Huehuetenango on the Mexican border has seven different cultures within its boundaries.  At Chichicastenango is the most famous market in Central America, where traders come from all over the country to sell modern and traditional wares. Beside the market is the 400-year old church of Santo Tomás, built on the ceremonial grounds of the Ki’chés. Now an abrupt change. A 40-minute flight brings us to Petén, where there is the largest Mayan centre in the country with over 100 sites. We will visit the most spectacular site at Tikal, which has the highest pre-Colombian pyramids and many columns and altars with inscriptions that have only been deciphered in the last 30 years. The flora and fauna are also unique. Then by road to Rio Dulce, the 42-km river that flows out of Guatemala’s biggest lake, Lake Izabal. At its mouth lies the fort of San Felipe, which guarded Guatemala’s trade routes in colonial times. Rio Dulce is an area of fantastic natural beauty, leading us – by boat - to Livingston on the east coast with its typically Caribbean sounds and specialities. A visit to the Mayan site at Quiriguá in the Del Monte banana plantation is followed by a trip to Copán in Honduras, well-known for its wonderful Mayan columns and its hospitality.
